Obituary for Alex J. Cantini

Alex J. Cantini, 74, of Irwin, Hempfield Twp. died Monday, Nov. 30, 2020 in the UPMC Mercy Hospital. He was born August 15, 1946 in Jeannette. He was the son the late Alex and Elsie Mae (Karasek) Cantini. Prior to retiring, AL was the owner/operator of Al’s Service of Wendel Road in Irwin. Throughout his life, Al’s passion was for repairing cars, and although retired he still went to his shop almost every day. In his early years Al participated in demolition derbies, enjoyed riding his BMW motorcycle, and was a member of the BMW Motorcycle Owners Assoc. He was a member and usher at the St. Agnes Catholic Church of North Huntingdon, AL was Veteran of the Vietnam War serving in the US Marine Corps., and was a member of the West Hempfield American Legion. Al processed wild game for many years for family, friends, and especially his customers, he truly enjoyed helping other people, and was a friend to all. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Gary Cantini and a sister Carole Foreman and her husband Robert. Surviving are his wife of nearly 55 years Marilyn (Olesh) Cantini, a son Alex John Cantini and his wife, Teresa, of Harrison City, two granddaughters, Victoria and Madalyn Cantini, a sister Dianna Ficco of Greensburg, and a sister-in-law Avalene Cantini of Herminie. Also surviving are numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Al will be sadly missed by his coffee club friends at his garage and his beloved cat Bebe. The Cantini family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to friends, Tim, Pat, Shirley and the staff at UPMC Mercy Hospital for their help and compassion. Friends will be received at the Ott Funeral Home Inc. 805 Pennsylvania Ave., Irwin on Tuesday from 3-7 PM. Parting prayers will take place on Wednesday at 9:30 AM in the funeral home, followed by a 10:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial at the St. Agnes Church. Interment will follow in the Westmoreland County Memorial Park.
