Obituary for Robert John Ryder

Robert John Ryder, 89, died on February 17, 2021 at his home at Redstone Highlands in North Huntingdon, PA. He was born on April 19, 1931 in Olean, New York, the son of Robert Saunders Ryder and Monica Barry Ryder. He was a 1949 graduate of Olean High School and a graduate of Alfred University in 1953 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Glass Technology. Bob went on to receive his Masters degree (1955) and his Doctorate degree (1959) in Ceramic Technology from Penn State University. He married the former Suzanne Cummings on June 19, 1954 and they spent the first 6 years of marriage in State College, PA while Bob was in graduate school. In June of 1959, the family moved to Brockway, PA where Bob began his career at Brockway Glass in the Research and Development group where he eventually rose to Vice President of R&D and then Vice President of Technical Services in the Glass Container Division. Bob’s leadership resulted in development of Brockway Glass’ original Environmental Compliance Group and development of the capability to accurately predict emissions from glass melting furnaces. This allowed emissions requirements to be considered during new furnace design such that compliance was assured prior to construction. Bob authored and co-authored numerous glass-related national and international technical publications during his career. In 1989 Bob was the recipient of the Phoenix Award which acknowledges significant contribution and lifetime achievement in the glass industry. Bob spent the last six years of his career in Toledo, OH after the merger between Brockway Glass and Owens-Illinois Glass. Upon his retirement in 1994 Bob returned home to the Brockway-Dubois area and remained there until 2020 when he moved to North Huntingdon, PA to be nearer to his children. Bob was a very involved member of the Saint Tobias Parish and the community while living in Brockway. His happiest times were with his family, especially the annual beach vacations to Emerald Isle, NC and the Christmas holiday family gatherings. Bob was preceded in death by his daughters Lynn Suzanne Baker (1986) and Anne Marie Riccardi (2020), grandson Brian Robert White, Jr., and brother-in-law James Rude. He is survived by his wife Suzanne; by his son Robert C. Ryder (Kathy), and daughters Catherine M. White (Brian) and Christine E. Ryder; and his son-in-law Donald Riccardi. He is also survived by grandchildren Keri Cavanaugh (Scott), Kristofer Porter (Myungsun Jang), Jessica Lynn Ryder, Robert Raymond Ryder and Andrew Patrick Ryder, Joseph Lawrence Beighey, Jonathan Robert White, Tyler Ryder White and Molly Elizabeth White; and great grandchildren Hailey and Ethan Cavanaugh; and also by his siblings Maryanna (Charles) Farrell, Douglas (Nancy) Ryder and Ruth Ryder-Rude; & their children.
