Obituary for Ruth Shuster (Nicolette)

Ruth Nicolette Shuster, age 100 years and 10 months, of Irwin, passed away peacefully at home on January 16, 2022. Born March 3, 1921, she was a daughter of the late Maria “Mary” (Cecconello) and Giacamo “Jack” Nicoletto. In her high school year book, she was described as “A small girl who has plenty of pep.” This description held true for her entire life. Ruth loved dancing, traveling, thrift shopping and eating sweets. She was a drummer at the Herminie senior center for many years. She played great April Fools’ Day jokes and told interesting stories. She hosted big holiday meals for her family through her nineties. For the past many years, she said “Every day is a bonus day” almost daily. She frequently told us, “I never had a lot (of money), but I always had enough.” She taught us that love and family are the most important things. Ruth worked 23 jobs in her life. She served on the election board from 1947 through 2021. She LOVED her job at the Big Mac Museum McDonalds in Irwin from 1994 until December 22, 2021, cleaning the dining room, meeting friends new and old, and giving toys to kids. Many people came there just to see her and sing songs like “You Are My Sunshine” with her. She had polka birthday parties there annually starting at age 90. For her 100th birthday, McDonalds hosted a special party. And her neighbors arranged a firetruck parade through Irwin where the mayor gave her a key to the city. She also appreciated the many cards she received from all over the world for her hundredth birthday. “ Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Shuster; son-in-law Steve Trump; six siblings, Daniel, Clarence, Margaret, Arthur “Bud,” Ray and Roy; and her good friend and dance partner, Ray Scalise. She is survived by her two children, Jack (Mary Lou) Shuster of Irwin; and Janet Trump of Hurst, Texas; her five grandchildren, Stephanie (Jay) DiBernardo, Brett (Amanda) Shuster, Zak (Kaleigh) Shuster, Felisa Trump, and Marcelina (Adam) Williams; six great-grandchildren, Andrew, Alex, Maverix, Zaylyn, Nico and Zekiah; and many nieces, nephews and friends, all whom she loved “a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck.” This is a longer story than Ruth wanted - she always insisted “I am just plain Ruth.” But she touched too many lives not to write all this. Really, we’d like to write more. Per Ruth’s wishes, there will be “no line (visitation).” She wants everyone to remember her as she was. And to not be sad or miss her, but instead “think of the memories!” She is adamant about this so we will do our best. Please share any memories and pictures you have of her on the Facebook page “Remembering Ruth Shuster.” We look forward to seeing them. We love you forever, EE.
