Obituary for Sherman G Smithbower

Sherman G. Smithbower, 84, of North Huntingdon, passed away surrounded by his loving family, Sunday, January 24, 2021, at his home. He was born June 2, 1936, in Spangler, son of the late Germain and Margaret (McTavish) Smithbower. Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a general foreman for US Steel, Homestead Works, and later as an inside salesman for Shuster Building Components. Sherman was a member of St. Agnes Church, North Huntingdon, where he and his late wife, Irene, were active in the Marriage Preparation program, working with newly engaged couples. He also was a member of the Murrysville Historical Preservation Society and the Knights of Columbus, Council 4226, Murrysville. He was a veteran of the Army, serving at Fort Rucker, AL. Sherman was a 1955 graduate of Franklin Regional High School and went on to earn his Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Management from St. Vincent College in 1959. He was a wonderful, loving husband, father and grandfather who always put the needs of others first. He loved to dance with his wife and was a huge supporter of her Slovak heritage. Sherman had an incredible mechanical mind and could fix anything. He had a passion for woodworking, enjoyed gardening, and loved playing his Hammond organ. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Irene (Shivy) Smithbower; sister, Joyce Curry; brother-in-law, Paul Shivy; and sister-in-law, Helen McGettigan. He is survived by three children, Suzanne Hartner and her husband, Bruce, of North Huntingdon, Celeste Smithbower, of Penn Twp., and his son, best friend and caregiver, Daniel Smithbower, of North Huntingdon; granddaughters, Jessica, Lauren and Sarah Hartner; a sister, Cynthia Smithbower, of North Huntingdon; and many nieces and nephews. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Ott Funeral Home, 805 Pennsylvania Avenue, Irwin. Parting prayers will be held at 9:15 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home, followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial celebrated in St. Agnes Church.
