Obituary for Steve L. Pernick

Steve L. Pernick, 88, of Harrison City, was called home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, January 21, 2022 in the Brookdale Senior Living Center, Murrysville. He was born August 23, 1933 in Dravosburg, son of the late Steve J. and Agnes (Ketchmere) Pernick. Steve was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather, dedicated to his family. Steve was a graduate of Glassport High School and the University of Maryland. He also attended Carnegie Institute of Technology in pursuit of an M.S. in Nuclear Engineering. Steve served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean War, followed by service in the Air Force Reserves and was a retiree of Duquesne Light. Steve was always available with a smile, a hug, and a helping hand wherever it was needed, whether it be watching his grandkids, helping to remodel a house, or giving a few words of well-needed wisdom. The love and pride Steve had for his children and grandchildren was unmatched. Hearing about the accomplishments of all of his grandchildren always brought a smile and a “Woo-ooo!” to his lips. He especially loved to listen to his granddaughter, Sophie, play the piano. His son- and daughters-in-law were blessed to have that second dad that treated and loved them as his own. Steve thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing. He often told of traditional boyhood fishing trips to Pymatuning Lake, which he continued with his own children and today, “Pappy’s rock” is enjoyed by his grandchildren on annual trips. Steve was talented in woodworking and making grandfather clocks. He was also an avid reader, never wanting to miss the newest findings in quantum physics and space. Steve was a member of the St. Barbara’s Parish in Harrison City and former member of North American Martyrs Parish in Monroeville. In addition to his parents, Steve was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Jean M. (Lagalski) Pernick, in 2019, and his sister, Delores (Pernick) Richards. Surviving are his three children, Stephanie (Jon) Haverstick of Butler; Steve J. (Trisha) Pernick of Murrysville; Mark (Victoria) Pernick of Level Green; seven grandchildren, Tess Haverstick, Mark (Paige), Sophia and Jason Pernick, Madison Bigley, Steve W. and Caroline Pernick and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Family and friends will be received at the Ott Funeral Home, Inc., 805 Pennsylvania Avenue, Irwin, on Tuesday 10 to 12:45 p.m. at Ott Funeral Home Inc 805 Pennsylvania Avenue Irwin. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. at St. Barbara Parish in Harrison City. Private interment will take place at Irwin Union Cemetery, North Huntingdon.
